Session 1: Vision

Here are some highlights from the first session:
  • The dream of many to earn a degree, get a good job, make plenty of money so you can live a good life and support your family is, statistically, in jeopardy.
  • Having a vision for your life, your job, your family, your walk with God is key to helping not become just another statistic.
  • Vision is the image of hope.
  • Vision is the starting point for any great accomplishment.
  • The important of having a vision has been touted from the time of King Solomon to today.
  • A vision-scene is a short, vivid mental movie in which depicts an event that represents success (to you)

What to Do

Here are some proactive steps you can take to begin the process of developing a vision.

Make this your goal for the week:
Commit to writing a "vision-scene" that depicts your life as you want it to be in the future. The scene can be a near as shortly after graduation from college or as far as the end of your life. The term "vision-scene" is one I made up and it refers to a mental "movie" in which you can see vividly a short event that represents for you a picture of success.
Not sure what you want to do with your life? Try these steps:
  • Pray. If you come from a Christian world-view then you know that God has a plan for you. It only makes sense to talk with Him about it. If you don't know God His principle of vision will still work for you, but you won't enjoy his peace and guidance.
  • Write down your answers to these questions:
    • What are several things I most enjoy doing?
    • What am I good at doing?
    • What topics, activities, events evoke in me strong emotions?
    • What experiences in my life were the most fulfulling?
    • How do I spend my free time? What do I enjoy talking about?
    • Was there a time I felt that God spoke to me about my future?
  • Ask these people what they see you accomplishing down the road:
    • Parent(s) / grandparent(s)
    • Two or three friends who know you well
    • A teacher / counselor
  • Tie it all together: There is a sad fact of life that most of us will need to earn money either through self-employment or a traditional job. Is there any intersection among the answers to the questions above, the feedback from others, and opportunities to make money? If so, you might consider heading that direction.
